FX’s ‘A Teacher’ Limited Series Gets Green Light; Nick Robinson Joins Kate Mara As Co-Lead

FX’s ‘A Teacher’ Limited Series Gets Green Light; Nick Robinson Joins Kate Mara As Co-Lead
FX has given a formal green light to A Teacher, a 10-episode limited series based on Hannah Fidell’s buzzy 2013 Sundance feature, starring and executive produced by Kate Mara. Additionally, Nick Robinson has been cast as a co-lead opposite Mara in the series, which has been in development at FX since last year. FX Productions is the studio.

Fidell, who wrote, directed and produced the 2013 film, will pen the adaptation, direct and executive produce the limited series.

A Teacher explores the story behind the mugshot of a female high school teacher caught in an affair with her male student, revealing the complexities and consequences of these illegal relationships.

Mara and Robinson star respectively as Claire, a popular young teacher at a suburban Texas high school, and Eric, an all-American high school senior.

Fidell executive produces with Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman of Aggregate Films, Danny Brocklehurst and Mara.

“Hannah Fidell is an exceptional filmmaker we have long admired for her intuitive ability to bring complex stories to life with depth and grace,” said Gina Balian, President, Original Programming, FX Entertainment. “We are thrilled to partner with Hannah, Kate Mara, Michael Costigan, Jason Bateman and Danny Brocklehurst to adapt A Teacher into a limited series for FX, with Kate leading an extraordinary cast along with Nick Robinson.”

“Working with FX – truly the home of all my favorite shows – on A Teacher is a dream come true,” said Fidell. “I couldn’t ask for a more perfect partner who, from day one, has understood and embraced the inherent complexities and nuance required for such subject matter.”

Robinson, who starred in features Love, Simon and Everything, Everything, was a series regular on the ABC Family series Melissa and Joey. Other credits include Native Son, Jurassic World, and Boardwalk Empire, among others. He’s next set to make his Broadway debut in the hit Aaron Sorkin adaptation of Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, replacing the outgoing Will Pullen as Jem Finch in November.

Mara is repped by Wme, Mosaic, Viewpoint, Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. Robinson is repped by UTA, Management 360, Savage Agency and Fred Toczek.

Democratic Debates: Moderates Swing at Warren, Sanders; Williamson Sets Internet Ablaze

Anyone tuning into the Democratic primary debates on CNN expecting to see Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders take swings at each other was likely disappointed, but several less well-known candidates — Marianne Williamson in particular — garnered a perhaps unexpected amount of attention on the stage of 10 in Detroit on Tuesday night.

Warren, Sanders and Pete Buttigieg scored the most talking time, according to NPR’s calculation, in a sprawling, more-than-two-and-a-half-hour debate that covered health care, gun violence, immigration, trade, education and racism.

The two leading progressive candidates took a strong position advocating for Medicare-for-All. Sanders, calling the nation’s current health care system “dysfunctional,

CNN’s Democratic Debate Was a Frantic Lightning Round, But Still an Improvement (Column)

Tuning into the second round of Democrat debates on CNN, you’d be forgiven for briefly mistaking it for a boxing match. Bombastic highlight reels trumpeting a showdown between “The Progressives” (Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren), assorted moderates (chiefly Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke) and gauzy meme generator Marianne Williamson opened the night. Red, white and blue flashed by as a voiceover befitting a summer disaster movie blockbuster intoned that tonight, 10 candidates would be battling it out “for the heart of the party.” If the candidates walked onstage and immediately started brawling, I wouldn’t have blinked twice.

            None of this,

Hannah Brown’s journey for love continued — and kept continuing — with the second half of her overly-emotional finale on Tuesday night.

And turns out (spoiler alert!) she is essentially still single.

Brown’s two-part finale kicked off on Monday night in Greece with three men as her final suitors: Peter Weber, Jed Wyatt and Tyler Cameron. Brown sent home Pilot Pete, who sat down with her and host Chris Harrison for a never-ending, live sit-down show on Monday,

The Second Democratic Presidential Debate, Night 1: Who Won?

The Democratic presidential race kicked off Round 2 on Tuesday night, as half of the 20 candidates currently in the mix debated live on CNN, for nearly three hours.

CNN’s Jake Tapper, Dana Bash and Don Lemon cracked the whip loudly and often during the proceedings, earning some admonishment on social media for continually cutting off respondents just as they were getting to the meat of their answer.

We pick up with Camille storming off the set, practically ripping her dress off to get rid of her mic. She sobs to Andy backstage about how “nasty” all the ladies are being towards her, including Denise, with Andy pointing out, “Well, you just said you didn’t like her, and she’s boring.” (Camille doubles down on the “boring” part, by the way.) The other ladies are bewildered

The finale opens with Chris Harrison teasing a “shocking” conclusion that involves “the massive, destructive forces of lies and betrayal” (!) and a surprise twist he describes as “cringeworthy.” (Buckle up!) How The CW’s ‘Riverdale’ Provides a Direction Through the Cluttered Streaming Landscape

Streaming has become something of a buyer’s market recently, and network executives are hustling to make their platforms stand out in an unprecedented and crowded film and television environment.

At the Natpe Streaming Plus event in Los Angeles Tuesday, panelists, including executives from Netflix, CBS All Access, Starz, and a host of other television networks and streaming platforms, discussed the problems of monetization and content delivery that film and television providers are grappling with in the era of streaming video.

No matter the subject, the perpetually increasing competitiveness of the streaming market loomed over every panel. There are already over 300 streaming services in the United States, and many of them feature acclaimed and popular films and television shows. Content wasn’t the primary discussion topic at Natpe, and rightfully so: Having the rights to one or two hit programs is no longer enough to stand out in the saturated streaming market,

Cameron Boyce’s Death Was Caused by Epilepsy, Autopsy Report Says

Disney Channel actor Cameron Boyce’s death was tied to his epilepsy, a report from the Los Angeles Country Medical Examiner-Coroner revealed on Tuesday.

Boyce died on July 6 at the age of 20. The coroner’s report called it a “sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.”

The coroner’s findings are consistent with his family’s previous statement, which attributed his death to a seizure from epilepsy. “Cameron’s tragic passing was due to a seizure as a result of an ongoing medical condition, and that condition was epilepsy,” the statement, issued a few days after his death, read.
